Hair Care Routine: How to Maintain Shine and Support Growth

Scalp Health is Hair Health
Many of us spend hundreds of dollars on repairing hair masks and split-end serums. However, hair is dead tissue once it leaves the follicle. If you want truly strong, shiny hair that grows quickly, you must shift your focus to where it begins: the scalp. A healthy scalp routine is the foundation of any hair growth journey.
1. The Pre-Wash Scalp Oil Routine
Scalp oiling is an ancient practice that has gained global popularity. Massaging oil into your scalp stimulates blood circulation, bringing oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicles.
- Rosemary Oil: Studies show that rosemary essential oil (diluted in a carrier oil like jojoba or pumpkin seed) is highly effective at promoting hair density.
- How-To: Apply a few drops to your scalp, massage with your fingertips or a silicone scalp massager for 5 minutes, leave it on for 1–2 hours, then wash out.

2. Washing and Conditioning Rules
How you wash your hair matters just as much as what products you use:
- Shampoo the Scalp Only: Focus your shampoo on the roots to remove excess sebum and product build-up. The suds running down your hair are enough to clean the ends without drying them out.
- Condition the Ends Only: Applying conditioner to your roots weighs down your hair and clogs scalp pores.
- Cool Rinse: Finish your wash with a splash of cool water to seal the hair cuticles, locking in shine.
3. Protection & Drying
Wet hair is weak hair. Treat it gently:
- Microfiber Towels: Swap your rough cotton towel for a soft microfiber towel or a clean t-shirt to blot out moisture, reducing frizz.
- Detangle Safely: Use a wide-tooth comb or a wet brush, starting from the ends and working your way up to the roots.
- Heat Protection: Never use a blow dryer, straightener, or curling iron without applying a high-quality heat protectant spray first.
| Step | Product Category | Frequency | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prep | Rosemary Scalp Oil | 2x a week | Stimulates follicles, boosts density |
| Wash | Clarifying Shampoo | 1-2x a month | Removes product buildup |
| Dry | Microfiber Towel | After washing | Prevents friction damage |
| Style | Heat Protectant Spray | Before heat styling | Prevents structural thermal breakdown |
Nighttime Protection
To prevent breakage while you sleep, switch to a silk or satin pillowcase. Traditional cotton pillowcases create friction that roughs up the hair cuticle. You can also loosely braid your hair or gather it into a silk scrunchie (the "pineapple" method) to keep it protected overnight.
